It was 22 years ago when I arrived in Canada and chose Calgary, Alberta to be my home.  Leaving my family and friends behind, it was a new adventure for me to be in a new country without knowing anyone.  That was the time I looked for a Filipino community paper and never found any, [...]

DAMAYAN PARA SA PINOY, ANOTHER WORTHY CAUSE FOR TYPHOON YOLANDA SURVIVORS!

by C. K.
It never fails, Pinoys will be there for their kapwa Pinoys…..this was proven once again by yours truly always at your service.
It was in the early part of November that our home country, the Philippines was again struck by Typhoon Haiyan better known as Typhoon Yolanda struck the southern part of the country, namely in Samar, Leyte specifically Tacloban, Cebu and Roxas City.
As soon as I heard about this tragedy in our home country, I called on our partner in cargo – UMAC EXPRESS CARGO  to seek assistance in our drive for used clothes and other necessities that we can send off to the Typhoon Yolanda survivors.  We ended up with 37 boxes of relief goods to our fellow kababayan in the southern part of the Philippines.  Aside from UMAC sponsoring 10 boxes, Pinoy Times sponsored 10 boxes as well and ROBERTSON College also sponsored 10 boxes and one of my co-worker and her husband and sister in law sponsored the 7 boxes. All boxes were shipped out by the end of November 2013.  I would like to thank all those who donated and those who volunteered their time to sort and pack the boxes both in our garage and at the UMAC warehouse.
Then on December 1st, we had our variety show fundraising event to the DAMAYAN PARA SA PINOY 2013. We raised $ 3,000.00 from ticket and food sales and $ 800.00 from our t-shirts sales, We also raised $ 1,200 from our silent auction.  And on December 14 at the Annual Pinoy Times Christmas party, we raised $ 800.00 on the grand raffle draw, roundtrip tickets to Manila with a free accommodation for a week.  And for every ticket sold that night, $ 5.00 goes toward the relief fund.  Over all, we turned over $ 6,500.00 to SAGIP KAPAMILYA and the cheque was handed over to Ms. Tina Munzon Palma.  We would like to thank all those who donated and Manila Convenience Store for their generosity.
