It was 22 years ago when I arrived in Canada and chose Calgary, Alberta to be my home.  Leaving my family and friends behind, it was a new adventure for me to be in a new country without knowing anyone.  That was the time I looked for a Filipino community paper and never found any, [...]

Welcome to 2014! A new year, new hopes, new dreams. May this year bring you happiness and may your dreams and wishes come true. May you continue to better your life and to help those back home do the same.

For us, we rang in the New Year with our traditional party with family and friends, thankful for so much in 2013 and with more ambitions for 2014. Then, on January 2 we celebrated the birthday of my father-in-law, my wife’s Dad – Tatay Reyes. His 89th year however would be his last as two days later our Father in Heaven chose to call him home and our world is minus another great man.

Tatay Reyes, a man who raised 15 kids. A man who cherished his wife of nearly 70 years and who instilled in his children, including my wife, the virtues of discipline, respect, hard wok and a love of God. Suddenly moving on to a better life beyond, he leaves a void in the lives of so many he touched.

Being forced to give up his love of riding his bicycle only a year or two ago, his longevity can be attributed to a healthy lifestyle of being active and he was only forced to stop riding because he occasionally would get lost. His daily bike rides of up to 20 km, while in his 80’s, to visit his lifelong friends and relatives kept him happy and up at sunrise every morning. I have been Blessed to have met him.

The outpouring of love and condolences from our friends and relatives here, in the Philippines and around the world, has been overwhelming. How comforting to know, that as we all experience these sad, yet joyous moments in life that we can count on the support of so many kind people. Thank you very much.

Praise God that my wife Ludy was there in the Philippines just last month to be with him and to care for him. Thank Him for reminding us of the real priorities in life, and that we should make time for our family – while they are still living. God is good. Life is good! Have a great 2014!

Steve
