Based on a national review conducted by Mediacorp Canada Inc. this award recognizes Alberta employers that offer exceptional places to work. An award presentation took place on Monday, February 8 in Council.

“Each day my colleagues at The City of Calgary come to work knowing that we get to do great things to make Calgary an even better place in which to live, work and play,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “We’re proud to receive this honour, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to recognize the hard working people who serve this community so well.”

Employers were evaluated based on eight criteria: performance management, training and skills development; community involvement; physical workplace; work and social atmosphere; health, financial and family benefits; vacation and time off; and employee communications.

City Manager, Jeff Fielding said, “We’re a top employer and a great place to work because of the people that work here. Our employees have a passion for public service and are committed to working together for the benefit of Calgarians.”

The City offers diverse working environments and opportunities in a variety of occupations that enable it to attract and retain a skilled workforce. In some cases, specialized skills are required to serve Calgarians and some positions continue to be hard to fill including assessors, buyers, civil engineers, heavy duty mechanics, lawyers and senior planners.

Being recognized as one of Alberta’s Top 70 Employers supports The City’s effort to attract and retain the best candidates so it can effectively deliver on Council’s priorities.

Mediacorp Canada Inc. manages the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project. They have been reviewing Canadian employers to determine which offer exceptional workplaces for employees since 2001.

The City of Calgary is the third largest municipality in Canada. The City delivers services to 1.2 million citizens by operating public facilities, managing waste and water, delivering recreational programs, providing public transit, maintaining roads and so much more. Its collective vision is making Calgary a great place to make a living, a great place to make a life.
