AN OPEN LETTER: To Concerned Parents and Families

We strongly oppose and reject the Alberta Ministry of Education’s Guidelines For Best Practices: Creating Learning Environments That Respect Diverse Cultural Sexual Orientations, Gender Identities and Gender Expression, which will be implemented in all schools (including Catholic schools) on March 31, 2016.

The guidelines will impose one particular view of sexuality on the entire population through the school system and leave the rights of the majority unprotected. It will strip parents of their right to determine and choose the kind of education and value system given to their children. Additionally, it compels school authorities to implement the features of the guidelines.

The basis of these guidelines is Bill 10, which was passed by the Alberta Legislative Assembly without public consultation on March 10, 2015. Prior to the Bill, Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) were already permitted in all Alberta schools. Bill 10 puts students in charge of what clubs and activities are permitted at the schools they attend, and legally prevents parents from having any say in the matter.

What can you do to protect your rights as parents and the rights of your children who may disagree with the guidelines?

Stand up, assert your rights and be heard, and take the following steps:

Contact your local MLA with your opposition. To find your MLA, go to : https://www.assembly.ab.ca/net/index.aspx?p=mla_home (underscore between “mla” and “home”. Call both their Constituency & Legislative offices (leave a voice mail if no one picks up the phone).

Spread the information to you friends and co-workers.

We must actively voice out our opposition to the guidelines and Bill 10. We are on the side of the law. It is contrary to the Supreme Court of Canada ruling in Loyola v. Quebec, 2015 SCC 12, in which the Court upheld the right of parents to determine the culture, character and learning environment of the schools that their children attend.
