It was 22 years ago when I arrived in Canada and chose Calgary, Alberta to be my home. Leaving my family and friends behind, it was a new adventure for me to be in a new country without knowing anyone. That was the time I looked for a Filipino community paper and never found any, [...]

Praise God from Whom all Blessings Flow! Do you live by that slogan? Or are they just fancy words you repeat to yourself once in a while? With life and all its abundances and conveniences and luxuries – we have become spoiled! So maybe you experienced a loss – your house burned down. You have been Blessed to even have a home! Yours was probably nicer than many others in this world who don’t have a home. Feeling bad because you lost your job? You are Blessed because you had a job! Frustrated and sad because something material was stolen or damaged? Maybe your car? You were Blessed to have one! Just think back home how many people don’t have cars.
Today’s world, especially the one we live in here in Canada has become so materialistic – people ruining their lives and their health – just trying to keep up with each other, trying to get ahead of someone else. Bragging because they have seen more or they’ve done more or they have more. Trust me – you will never be satisfied with material things. You will be disappointed and depressed because someone else will come along that has more toys!
What really are your motives for doing good, being generous or being kind? Why are you putting so much effort into charity or pursuit of material things? Is it to please God, or is it to get admiration from others? Is it to get a tax credit? Is it to get plaques, certificates or commendations?
Today’s generation is all about “me”. Look at me, look at all I have, look at how beautiful I am! Selfies, self promotion – selfish purposes, have you ever thought about doing something anonymous? Something for the Glory of God? While I admire people’s efforts and ambition, occasionally the goal seems to be for the wrong reasons, in the wrong direction. I wonder how much better our world would be if EVERYONE pursued the same goal of making the world a better place – for everyone! Most people are trying to make a better world only for themselves, maybe their family, maybe a few friends, but for self-centered grounds usually.
The few people I know and have met over the past 50 years, who focus on pleasing God, are the most satisfied, happy and content people you could imagine! They don’t look around and become jealous, envious and depressed because someone has more. They take what life, and God has dealt them, and Praise Him from Whom all Blessings Flow! Maybe it’s not too late for you to examine you motives for your efforts. Your life is what you make it – there is no one to blame.
