Movie Review: THE THIRD PARTY

The title itself is a bit intriguing giving us a hint of the film being complicated. There is no doubt that The Third Party has a lot of funny bits, and conflicting situations. I think this is Sam Milby’s first ever gay role which is quite surprising, and tackling a story that pushes gender fluidity isn’t normal as all we know. The film is brave for its themes, and maybe also with some of its scenes with Miby, Locsin and Marudo genuinely portray their roles that makes some of the moments defy the norm of attraction, the way we usually see in life.

It’s fun, light, clears some of the stereotypes of being gay or being bisexual or even being confused with ones’ preference in life. Andi is unfortunately only a third of a trio of characters. The other two are Andi’s ex-boyfriend Max (Sam Milby) and Max’s current boyfriend Christian (Zanjoe Marudo), the couple who adopts Andi for the purpose of adopting her baby when she finally gives birth. Andi always knows what she wants but complications always gets in her way, and Angel Locsin did a terrific job with that character, she’s busy with everything happening in her life that includes her relationship with Max and with Christian. The problems and how they were solved is presented in the film, but they don’t go as deep as you want them to be.The situation, while morally confounding, is one that immediately lends itself to a lot of comedic opportunities.

Clearly, The Third Party is more comfortable in exhausting the situation of Andi, making her a more complete character than either Max or Christian, who at times feel like their problems and personalities are designed within the limits of what is acceptable within a market sensitive to socially acceptable norms and political correctness.

This movie is an eye opener to everyone who thinks that being gay or having feeling with the same sex is simple but we really never know. I’ve seen a lot of situations where couple are married, have children and yet the guy starts to have an affair with the same sex or vice versa. Third Party also reminds us that we cannot judge people with their preferences because it is not fair and it doesn’t define who they are as a person.
