Why study the Bible?
This is my maiden article of the Pinoy Times and I like to share you above all what is closest to my heart and this is the Bible, the Word of God.
I have a niece who always sent me quite a long text messages from Manila, thanks to the MS Messenger. One day she realizes that she should be sending short messages instead of long ones. I have to correct her that it is not the length that counts. It is the content. Is it positive? Is it truthful? Is it honest? Is it right? Is it encouraging? Is it full of hope and expectation? I mentioned these one because in any relationship, communication is important. But the elements of true communication must be based on the above – truth, honesty, transparency, positive, love, kindness, just, hope and faith in God.
This is the way the God of the universe, communicated with us and the way He did this is by sending to us not a short messages. He sent to us long, long messages – 66 books of the Old Testament and the New Testament. And in this book, He let us know who God is. You can never know who God is without a right understanding of the Bible. Without the Bible, your knowledge is superficial and devoid of truths. Your understanding if it is based on your surrounding – what you heard, and saw and experienced is shallow and without merit at all. And these are poor substitutes for knowing the truth of the Bible. In other religion like Sikhism, you can never know who God is because to them he is impersonal. To know god, you have to go deep inside of you to obtain enlightenment and nirvana and be united to the unknown god.
To Christianity, we can know God because God is a person. “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God… And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father full of grace and truth.” (John 1: 1-14). God became a man lived with us for 33 years in the person of Jesus Christ to show who God is. This is the ultimate reason why Christianity is much, much superior to any other religions of the world.
Ika nga, hindi mo maki-kilala ang tunay na Dios kung wala kang tunay na kaalaman sa Biblia. God is a person who is good and glorious and He wants us to know Him and have a true relationship with Him because He loves us and He wants us to be with Him for all eternity. May we learn to love the Bible and study it and becomes a source of hope and encouragement of this life.
