Elha Nympha in Steve Harvey show

“What if they do not clap?” That was the biggest worry young singer Elha Nympha had before stepping onto the stage of “Little Big Shots”—the American talent show for children hosted by Steve Harvey, which is now on its second season.

“I am used to performing here in the Philippines. But it was my first time in the United States, and I did not know how the people there would react. I was nervous about that,” Elha said at a recent press preview of her appearance in the program, which will air on the cable channel Diva tonight at 7.

But as it turned out, the 12-year-old recording artist had nothing to worry about. After tackling Sia’s electro-pop ballad “Chandelier” and showcasing the vocal skills that helped her win the second season of “The Voice Kids Philippines” in 2015, the studio audience did not just give her a warm welcome—they rose up and erupted into resounding cheers.

Awestruck

Steve, on the other hand, watched on, awestruck, and at one point pumped his fist, as Elha ascended to the high register of her belting range. “Steve told me, ‘This little girl can sing!’” related Elha, who also shared with the talk show host the story of how she used to sell banana cue and sing for her customers, before making it in show biz. She is now one of the contestants in the ABS-CBN impersonation tilt, “Your Face Sounds Familiar Kids.”

“Little Big Shots,” which is co-executive produced by Steve and television host Ellen DeGeneres, scouts kids with exceptional talents all over the world. In her episode, Elha will be joined by 5-year-old Lucy, who can recite the Gettysburg Address; Caleb, a 4-year-old worship leader; and 6-year-old science whiz Mason.

Excerpts from our chat:

How did you get the gig? My label, MCA Music, informed me about it. Before I knew it, we were already getting visas.

When did you fly to the United States? We went there in June last year and stayed for three weeks. I got to visit nice places like Disneyland and Universal Studios—a dream come true.

Did you get to bond with Steve? We talked a lot backstage. He asked me if he is known in the Philippines. I said, “Yes, you are popular in my country!”

Great opportunity

How did you prepare? I made sure my voice was in good condition, just in case they make me perform a demanding song, like Mariah Carey’s “Emotions.” I also practiced my English diction.

How important is this guesting to your career? This is a great opportunity. This is a way for me to be known and hopefully book more shows, and achieve what I want to accomplish.

Do you want to pursue an international career? That is one of my dreams, performing in different countries.

I would love to guest in “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” too.

How has your life changed? Not much. I may be a recording artist now, but I still lead a normal life.

Do you still go to school? How do you balance it with your career? I go to a regular school. I make sure that I do my homework right away, so I would have enough time to rehearse or do other projects.

Do you still get in touch with your “The Voice” coach, Bamboo? Yes, I would not be here right now if it wasn’t for him.

What are your other plans? I am working on my second album. And I hope to achieve and learn more about this industry.

What is your advice to young aspiring singers? Do what you love, keep practicing and just be yourself. Do not be afraid to go for it. If you have God-given talent, do not let it go to waste.
