MANILA, Philippines — Senators have begun discussion on Wednesday regarding the Universal Health Care Bill, one of the priority bills of the Duterte administration.
The legislation primarily aims to expand the coverage of the benefits offered by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth).
The bill also covers the increasing of budget for the benefit package of PhilHealth, which aims to lessen the hospital bills of indigent patients.
It also covers the repair of facilities of public hospitals across the country.
To accomplish these goals, Senate Committee on Health and Demography Chairperson Joseph Victor Ejercito confirmed that PhilHealth is seeking to increase the premium contributions of middle income earners.
“The increase of premium proposed by PhilHealth from P2400 to P3600 by 2018 or 2019 for them to be able to improve their facilities,” Sen. JV Ejercito said.
He added that the Department of Health (DOH) needs a huge amount of fund for the repair public hospitals across the country which also transpired during the committee hearing.
“The DOH is saying they need in the next 5 years P228-billion to improve all hospitals facilities . . . the health facilities,” said Ejercito.
He explained that improving the facilities of public hospitals will also help reduce overcrowding of patients. – Nel Maribojoc | UNTV News & Rescue
