HAPPY NEW YEAR! HAPPY THREE KINGS! As we are now in 2019, new year, new beginnings, new challenges and new opportunities. Everyone is entitled to make their new year’s resolution for as long as they keep it in mind and make sure that they do it to the best of their ability. When I was young [...]

Another month has gone by and now we can all see that the leaves are starting to fall giving us the sign that summer will soon be over. It has been a rollercoster ride from mid- August to the two weeks of September as there were lots of events that happened in the Filipino community. And as a democratic country, anyone has the choice to participate in whatever events there is going on for all of us. All we need to do is to go and enjoy whatever is being offered to us especially when it comes to “free admission” events. It’s always nice to have that kind of priviledge.
Let’s start with the Globalfest. Since it’s Canada 150th birthday, this year’s Globalfest went local by just having participants from the different provinces of Canada. Nevertheless, even if we didn’t have an international display of fireworks from other countries, the different provinces of Canada proved that their displays are on the international scale. Everyone enjoyed each display of fireworks for the nights that they have gone except for one night where it was cancelled due to strong winds and of course, safety is a major concern of Globalfest when it comes to weather conditions. Next year, it will be definitely a bigger one as the Philippine will be a part again of the 2018 Globalfest which is definitely something to watch for.
Another highlight for the month of AUGUST was the BUWAN NG WIKA festivity thru the EXPO FILIPINO 2017 which was a one day event at the Murdoch Park in Bridgeland last August 26, 2017. It is a countrywide celebration in the Philippines and the BUWAN NG WIKA has always been celebrated during the month of August and I don’t think anyone can change it to any other month unless it is the Historical Commission in the Phlippines who will make an amendmet on this matter. It is the Philippine Languages and Cultural Society of Alberta’s way of giving back to the Filipino community to preserve the FILIPINO language even if we are now in Canada.
Then came the concert scene of Darryl Ong back to back with Mary Kate Aquino. I must admit that this is a well attended event especially when there is popular artist coming from the Philippines. But of course, we cannot deny the fact that Mary Kate Aquino together with Kathleen, did justice to their performance just as equal as Darryl Ong. Congratulations to the producers of this concert because once again, you have proven that Calgary has great local artists like Mary Kate Aquino.
Next out to watch for the the upcoming concerts of two of the greats performers from the Philippines, The Greatest Hits of Ely Buendia Live in Calgary at the Polish Canadian Cultural Centre on October 13, 2017 and Arnel Pineda at the Grey Eagle Resort and Casino on November 26, 2017. It’s definitely concert season for the Filipino community.
Enjoy the rest of the season and start packing up your summer wears.
Until next issue, Magandang buhay sa ating lahat!
