Dear readers, Since it’s the month of Holy week, I want to reflect on the 7 deadly sins that most Catholics and Christians take for granted. $125,000 available for non-profit initiatives to support affordable housing residents

As part of The Home Program, The City is offering grants of seed money to non-profits for initiatives that improve the housing system and stimulate lasting positive change for affordable housing residents. Applications with a focus on improving tenant self-sufficiency and increasing participation in community well-being activities can receive up to $15,000 per initiative. This program also advances The City’s affordable housing strategy, Foundations for Home.

Non-profit applicants are asked to show benefits to the affordable housing resident community in four key areas:

  • Residents feel they have increased housing stability
  • Residents have increased financial competency
  • Residents are more comfortable with and have better access to community wellness services and activities
  • Increased opportunities for resident-led community wellness activities

“We’re very excited to be putting these Home Program funds toward projects that benefit affordable housing residents and the community as a whole,” says Katherine Plotnick, Coordinator of Policy and Strategy with Calgary Housing. “We expect we’ll see some creative, grassroots proposals that will really help to build community participation and engagement.”

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis while funds are available. Once $125,000 is awarded, the application process will close for 2019. Organizations may submit more than one application for consideration, and accepted initiatives must be completed within 12 months from the time the funds are awarded.
