The Greatest Outdoor Show…Calgary Stampede

The Greatest Outdoor Show…Calgary Stampede thumbnail

By: Connie Kriaski

The Calgary Stampede is an annual rodeo, exhibition, and festival held every July in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The ten-day event, which bills itself as “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth”,[3] attracts over one million visitors per year and features one of the world’s largest rodeos, a parade, midway, stage shows, concerts, agricultural competitions, chuckwagon racing, and First Nations exhibitions. In 2008, the Calgary Stampede was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame.[4] The event’s roots are traced to 1886 when the Calgary and District Agricultural Society held its first fair. In 1912, American promoter Guy Weadick organized his first rodeo and festival, known as the Stampede. He returned to Calgary in 1919 to organize the Victory Stampede in honour of soldiers returning from World War I. Weadick’s festival became an annual event in 1923 when it merged with the Calgary Industrial Exhibition to create the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede.

It was a nice day today to go and spend a day at the Stampede. I was just in time to go around the grounds and see the rodeo at 1:30 pm. It was very interesting to watch the different events like the roping and the steering. And the Cowboys came from different places, mostly from the US. And there was on who came all the way from Australia. After watching the rodeo I went around and check out the different rides and games. It was fun to see that a lot of people carry stuff toys with them but I did not get lucky on any of the games I played. There were also lots of new food trucks and in my 23 years in Calgary, this year they had a Filipino food truck called the Hungry Beast and they are from Red Deer. I felt so much pride that finally other nationalities attending the festivities will have a taste of the Filipino food. I also went inside BMO where there’s the marketplace and it was totally different from before. There are lots ok f vendors but most significant change is the put a play center in the middle and it’s for young and old. It was a tiring day to think that I did not even made it to the grandstand show. For those who did not make it to the Stampede this year, make sure you put it on your list next year.
