FR. EDMUND F. VARGAS – Featured Filipino Calgarian

Fr Edmund Vargas has been the pastor of Sacred Heart Church in downtown Calgary since August 2001. He has been designated as the diocesan spiritual advisor of the Catholic Women’s League in the Diocese of Calgary since September 2001. He is also a designated member of St. Mary’s College University Community Advisory Council since January 2003. He is also involved in the Fire in the Rose, an ecumenical program on family violence and healing. He currently writes a column “Metaphors from a Priest” for a local Filipino paper.

He is an active member of the newly formed Phil-Can Tennis Association in Calgary. For several years now, he has been part of the Pilipino Masters Basketball Association of Calgary

Born on December 2, 1955,  Edmund F. Vargas was ordained priest on April 28, 1979 in Virac, Catanduanes, Philippines.  He finished his priestly studies at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila where he earned the degrees of Master of Arts in Higher Religious Studies and Licentiate in Sacred Theology.  He was part of the editorial staff of the Varsitarian, the official student publication of the university for three academic years. For seventeen years, he served in various pastoral responsibilities in the Diocese of Virac, including as principal of the Immaculate Conception Seminary-Academy, chancellor-secretary and director of the Social Action office.  He served as executive secretary of the Luzon Secretariat for Social Action of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, based in Manila. While serving in the diocese, he was also a regular columnist of the Catanduanes Tribune, a local weekly newspaper.

When he arrived in Calgary in August 1996, he temporarily stayed at St. Mark’s Church in NE Calgary until he was assigned as associate pastor of Holy Spirit Church from November 1996 to July 1999. From August 1999 to July 2001, he was pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Strathmore, Alberta.  In 2007, he attended the three-month sabbatical program at Institute for Continuing Theological Education in Rome.
