It was 22 years ago when I arrived in Canada and chose Calgary, Alberta to be my home.  Leaving my family and friends behind, it was a new adventure for me to be in a new country without knowing anyone.  That was the time I looked for a Filipino community paper and never found any, [...]

A Concert In Review………ONE KAPAMILYA GO! CANADA 2010

A Concert In Review………ONE KAPAMILYA GO! CANADA 2010 thumbnail

The Telus Convention Centre in Downtown Calgary once again got filled with so many Filipinos eager to watch the Fiesta Presentation sponsored by ABS-CBN TFC and GLOBE Kababayan. We have this time around the group called Sessionistas – comprised of Richard Poon, Duncan, Aiza Seguerra, Juris, Sitti and Nina. Of course the equally famous stand-up comedians Pooh and Kaye Brosas joined them as well to start the show up with cracks of laughter and fun. The line up started as early as 11 AM when everyone who attended the morning mass went straight to the Centre to make it to the front of the stage.  I myself was at the very front but didn’t enjoy the physical pain of some neck muscle strains. I walked around and sometimes sat at the back since there are a couple of wide screen monitors to enhance the view of the center stage. . .  Much clearer and better I supposed.

I am so thrilled that in our busy Canadian lives, we find time to relax and enjoy once in a while. The comedy of entertainers like this tandem by Pooh & Kaye was surely a sight. Kaye was funny with her repertoire of “green jokes” to which we are so fond of. Pinoys are so good when it comes to jokes that calls for some kinky thoughts. Her hand rendition of that song about “ulan” was the focal point of her greatness when it comes to stand up comedy. No wonder Kaye Brosas is making some waves in the Philippines.  Pooh was a bit serious at first that didn’t seem to tickle my bones until he started cracking up with several interpretations of one same song that catered to the interests of the oldies, and the young ones. His mimicry of different personalities i.e. Manny Pacquiao was also a forte for this comedian who admitted not being ashamed of what he does because he is proud to have sent three nephews/nieces to finish school. A trait that most of us adopted because of our close family ties that binds us with our loved ones whether we are near of far from them.  The local talents we provided the entertainers were our youthful dancers from PCCF Performing Arts and they too deserve to be commended.  It surely added some spice in somehow a bare stage they worked on. But who needs decorations? It is the show in their business that we are all looking forward to see and hear right?

The singers came performing next each with 2 songs and the group song at the very end.  Aiza Seguerra continues to wow me with her marvelous control of the guitar pick and the way she strums this electric instrument, Oh my gosh! It just enveloped the whole place and everyone was glued as if wondering if she will give up because she got tired or what… but to the amazement of everybody, she just kept going and going and going! Bravura!!!  What about the angelic voice of Juris, the Bossa Nova in the voice of Sitti, and the very romantic melody in the voice of Richard Poon? Yes, they were all justified by the resounding claps the audience awarded them.  The fast becoming famous R & B singer Duncan was not to be ignored. And when the high-pitched voice from Nina resonated the stage, all was under the spell. It moved everyone mysteriously just like Love in her song.

Overall, this concert was totally successful and not just another night to remember. It is a night to dream again and hope they would come back and entertain us all in the future.  We sincerely thank all the organizers and supporters of the show for bringing us the laughter and fun we definitely need to keep us going.
