Cultural Nite XVIII: Tabo Time Machine

May 28th 2011

Boyce Theatre (1410 Olympic Way Southeast
Calgary, AB T2G 2W1

Cultural Nite is an annual theatre production combining the art of drama, dance, and musical performance presented by the University of Calgary Filipino Students’ Association. This year will mark the celebration of our eighteenth showcase “Cultural Nite XVIII: Tabo Time Machine” which is about the story of a teenage girl that learns the values of family and her Filipino culture all while incorporating traditional dances of the Philippines as well as the young musical talent within our community. During the course of the play, the characters are thrown back into the 80’s by a time traveling tabo, a device used for bathing in the Philippines, to the first time in which her parents had immigrated to Winnipeg and started their family. Learning to bridge the cross-differences between generations and culture, the story brings forth the encouragement for viewers to reflect and embrace the roots of their cultural heritage.

University of Calgary Filipino Students’ Association (UCFSA):

This is our mission statement: The University of Calgary Filipino Students’ Association (UCFSA) is a social club sanctioned by the Student’s Union (U of C) in 1992. Its goal is to provide its members, as well as the community, with a taste of Filipino culture. Our motto is, “Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makarating sa paroroonan,” which means He who does not look back to his roots will not reach his destination. With this in mind, the UCFSA strives to help its members realize the best aspects of being Filipino-Canadians, while engaging a variety of people and reaching out to the community. With many active members and alumni throughout the community, the UCFSA is the perfect way to meet new people and have fun in a welcoming environment while learning a little more about Filipino culture.
