It was 22 years ago when I arrived in Canada and chose Calgary, Alberta to be my home.  Leaving my family and friends behind, it was a new adventure for me to be in a new country without knowing anyone.  That was the time I looked for a Filipino community paper and never found any, [...]

The Other Side

What an exciting summer so far, and it has just begun! If you have lived in Calgary for a few years you will know that the months of summer here are actually August and September, unlike the rest of Canada that gets a lot of really hot weather in July and August.

Aside from camping and many other activities we have done this summer, we still have GlobalFest coming up in a few days. Don’t miss the Philippine Pavilion and the Philippine Entry in the fireworks competition on August 21.

The awesome success of Calgary’s own Miss Mariedelle Velasco continued as she competed in another Pageant, this time in the Dominican Republic. Not only did Mariedelle capture the title of Best in National Costume, but she followed that up by winning the coveted title of Miss Tourism Petite Intercontinental 2011. Congratulations Mariedelle, you are our hero!

Another special Calgarian, Miss Marifel Mariz Buluran, brought home the title of Miss Golden Dream Girl Intercontinental 2011 as well as La Batalla Del Caribe 2011 (Best in Sea Marine Costume). Just as impressive was Miss Simone Amorado winning Reina Intl. Del Merengue 2011 and Little Queen Star Models Intercontinental 2011. Talk about Calgary’s domination at the Pageant!

Special thanks to the KASAYAHAN team of Ernie, Allan and Noel for supplying Mariedelle’s stunning Maria Clara style of dress made in the Philippines, produced for Paseo de ilo-ilo, a Spanish influenced dance. Additionally a huge thank you! To VISMINSA Charities for giving Mariedelle the chance to compete in the Dominican Republic, proving once again that Calgary is home to the most beautiful and talented Filipinos. Congratulations girls!

Another grand occasion recently was the celebration of Pinoy Times 3rd Anniversary Picnic. Thank you for the great food and fun Connie, and especially to Pinoy Times advertisers, sponsors and you, the readers, for continuing to support Pinoy Times as the #1 Filipino paper in Calgary!

One more event to look forward to is June 16, 2012 when Calgary’s Filipino community celebrates with PhilippineFest 2012, the biggest event of its’ kind in our city. Taking place at the posh $120 million Genesis Centre, planning will resume in September. There is still room for more leaders and performers so if you want be part of this memorable event contact myself or Ernie Miranda and Laurie Callao for details.

Stay cool!

Steve
