It was 22 years ago when I arrived in Canada and chose Calgary, Alberta to be my home.  Leaving my family and friends behind, it was a new adventure for me to be in a new country without knowing anyone.  That was the time I looked for a Filipino community paper and never found any, [...]

The Other Side

Wow, with summer arriving recently everyone is out and about and enjoying our beautiful city and province! Some people we haven’t seen since last fall have finally come out of their caves and are enjoying the early start to the BBQ season. With the days getting longer until June 21, we can enjoy sunlight until after 10:30 pm. For our friends in Edmonton, it is light out until 11 pm!

We have already made a few trips to the mountains, namely Takakkaw Falls, Wapta Falls and Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park. These are some of the most beautiful areas within a couple of hours of Calgary and we highly recommend them! They are not as busy as Banff and Lake Louise.

Closer to home, our favorite places for walks and hikes in the city are Douglas Fir Trail and Griffiths Woods in Calgary. If you are looking for some peace and quiet away from traffic, GOOGLE them and enjoy!

By the time this issue of Pinoy Times comes out, the Election in the Philippines will be over. Let’s hope that the 52 million voters elect those who will help the country instead of the usual looting. The ongoing unemployment, pollution, lack of birth control use and hopelessness needs to stop so the country can start to rebuild. We will never give up!

Just a short reminder to get your KASAYAHAN 2013 tickets soon. The show returns to Martha Cohen Theatre this year and takes place on Saturday June 22. Always a favorite for Calgarians, there will be some familiar performers as well as plenty of new entertainers. This is without a doubt the best show of 2013!

A few other events coming up this summer include the many Philippine Independence Day celebrations, Calgary Stampede, Globalfest and the Alberta Arts Days. Proudly, many Filipino performers will be at these events. I hope you are able to see them and applaud their efforts!

I wish that you can continue to make the most of your life and live each day to its’ fullest. Canada is a land of opportunity – don’t throw away your chance!

Have an awesome summer!

Steve
