RIZA SANTOS, BEAUTY AND BRAINS……

One week after mistakenly being named first runner up, Calgary’s Riza Santos was officially crowned Miss Universe Canada.  An official crowning ceremony was held Sunday at Osteria de Medici and receiving it in her hometown in front of dozens of family and friends made the moment even more special for the 26-year-old.

A technical glitch — one of the judges accidentally input incorrect scores from the swimsuit, evening gown and question components of the competition — saw Denise Garrido crowned at the May 25 pageant in Toronto, however organizers discovered the error less than 24 hours later.

“It was such a last-minute thing we put together,” she said.

“It’s interesting the way everything transpired. I guess everything happens for a reason and to have the crowning here in Calgary in front of friends and family means just as much to me, it’s not necessarily bittersweet.”

The former Miss World Canada and Miss Earth Canada will now represent Canada at the Miss Universe pageant in December, however a location hasn’t yet been announced.

Part of her busy schedule is a trip to Toronto. She will be modelling in Canada Philippine Fashion Week on June 8 at the Carriage House Inn, and from there she will be flying to Nicaragua to work with the charities SOS Children’s Villages and Operation Smile.”

Riza Sanatos is a student at the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary, she previously served for two years as a reservist with 15 Field Ambulance, completing her basic soldier qualifications.

Looking to the future, Santos said she sees herself one day becoming an entrepreneur. – source:  Calgary Sun
