It was 22 years ago when I arrived in Canada and chose Calgary, Alberta to be my home.  Leaving my family and friends behind, it was a new adventure for me to be in a new country without knowing anyone.  That was the time I looked for a Filipino community paper and never found any, [...]

ABA – Edmonton’s Karibok sa Tag-araw, a resounding success!

By Bel Elefante

Every year the Batangueno Association in Edmonton host a summer picnic for their members, friends, guests and supporters.  It has been a tradition for all members to donate pot luck food, bring their family and invite friends for a day of fun and games at the Emily Murphy Park.  This is the associations way of thanking and showing appreciation to their members and most especially to all those who volunteer and support the various projects undertaken by the association.  This year is no different from the past years, the event is very well attended and everybody shared the sumptuous food provided by the association. Fun started from 10:00 AM until late in the evening.  There were lots of games for all ages, kids and young at heart participated in sack race, longest line, various relays, the boat is sinking, apple eating, balloon popping, Tagalog to English translation, we even had pabitin and piñata which is a big hit for the little ones.  Kids’ creative minds were put to work when we had the tower building contest using marshmallows and spaghetti sticks.  Gym membership and zumba exercise came in handy in all the games that required strength and stamina.  Various Filipino associations and community groups were represented and joined the Batanguenos for a day of friendship, camaraderie and solidarity.  Lots of prizes and give-aways were donated to the group by various corporate sponsors, friends and ABA members so nobody went home empty handed just by participating in any of the games.  At the end of the day everyone has a big smile on their faces and is looking forward to ABA’s next activity which is on December 14, 2013 at St. Charles Parish Hall for the Paskuhang Ala-eh party.   Indeed, it was a day worth remembering because each and every ABA-Edmonton member stood proud as their hearts swell with pride because this event showcased how a great team spirit and cooperation made things happen.
