It was 22 years ago when I arrived in Canada and chose Calgary, Alberta to be my home.  Leaving my family and friends behind, it was a new adventure for me to be in a new country without knowing anyone.  That was the time I looked for a Filipino community paper and never found any, [...]

The Other Side

With Labor Day passing we are now into the second half of summer. There is still a lot of time left to enjoy it!

This past month again, has been packed full of fun concerts, shows and we even managed a couple of weekends of hiking. Myself, I became a school bus driver and then decided that I wasn’t willing to accept the huge responsibility of that position.

As for the hiking, I suggest that you check out both Ghost Lake and Grassi Lakes. At Grassi, be sure to take the “More Difficult” Trail. It’s not much harder than the “Easy” Trail, but offers beautiful views of Canmore, Spray Lakes and awesome waterfalls. Highly recommended!

On the party side of things – GlobalFest, The Mary Kate Concert, Riza Santos’ Charity event and the highlight of the year – KASAYAHAN – took place. Each one was a great time, both as entertainment and social events, my wife’s 3rd favorite activity – after eating and shopping! KASAYAHAN’s “Inspire” is the latest production of the Kasayahan Performing Arts Foundation and continues to get bigger and better with new stars being born every year!

This summer has been chock full of Charity events and Fundraising efforts due to the flooding here in Calgary and the continuing desire to help Filipinos back home. Even in times of high costs and economic instability it is comforting to know that there are many generous people willing to give their time and effort to good causes.

This next month continues with more events and performances and be sure to put Alberta Cultural Days on your schedule. There will be Filipino performances at Cardel Place on Saturday September 28 at 12 noon – FREE! of charge!

All in all it’s been a great summer, but it’s not over yet! Now is a good time to travel to B.C., even the areas just across the Alberta/B.C boundary, such as Yoho National Park with Takakkaw Falls and Wapta Falls. With highway traffic down after the long weekend there’s a good chance you’ll spot some bears!

See you next month – maybe….if the bears don’t get us!

Steve
