It was 22 years ago when I arrived in Canada and chose Calgary, Alberta to be my home.  Leaving my family and friends behind, it was a new adventure for me to be in a new country without knowing anyone.  That was the time I looked for a Filipino community paper and never found any, [...]

HELPING HANDS IN ACTION

by Olet “Diwata” Barnachea
As the saying goes, “No man is an Island”, means everyone needs someone, that people cannot stand and live by themselves. People in this world help and live with others like in case of emergencies, catastrophes, problems, challenges, and disasters in life.

Like what happened in our native land, Philippines, that was roughly hit by typhoon ” Yolanda” or “Haiyan”, many lives, houses, properties, you name it, were lost from the disaster.  Last November 22, 2013, there was this event. Philippines Calamity Fund Raising Concert orchestrated by CAFFA and Friends of Filipinos in Calgary. This successful activity was produced and directed by Visminsa Charities Foundation and Kasayahan Performing Arts Foundation. It was an All Star Cast Event with Riza Santos, Nathan Taylor, and Whittnie Gaqui as the Emcees for that night. There were dignitaries and guests such as MP Deepak Obhrai, Minister Jason Kenney, Minister of Employment and Social Development & Minister for Multiculturalism, MP Devinder Shory and MP Michelle Rempel, who participated the well attended event. The welcome address was delivered by Joven Bautista, the CAFFA president and with the closing remark by Dr. Rose Geonzon. The program had three acts which were the Tribute to Filipinos, Tulong, Tabang Tayo and lastly, Pagkakaisa. Many performances were shown such as gospel, religious and Acapella songs, choir numbers, Jazz, Zumba, Modern, Ballroom, Folk, and Hip Hop dances. This only shows that we Filipinos will do these numbers and activities to raise funds for our fellowmen in the Philippines. Congratulations and thanks to everyone for your endeavours.
