What You Need to Know Before Taking Diet Supplements

People are led to believe that there’s a pill for every problem. There are pills that relieve headaches, pills that help you sleep, and pills that make pooping easier. Of course, there are also the pills that claim to help with weight loss.

Those who want to achieve their health goals faster may turn to these supplements as a solution. However, it’s important to note that there are many misconceptions about diet pills, and some may even have little-known but potentially dangerous side effects. So if you’re considering taking diet supplements to help you achieve your ideal weight, it’s wise to do thorough research first before taking any pills. That said, here are some points to consider:

Not All Supplements Do What They Claim

Today, there is an abundance of weight loss pills on the market, yet not all of them are as effective as they claim to be. It’s over-the-counter diet pills and herbal supplements that you need to watch out for. This is because not all of the products in these categories are regulated by the FDA. For these, be sure to examine the ingredients used, as well as legitimate user reviews.

However, this does not mean that all weight loss pills are useless. For instance, NBC cites a study that has already proven the efficacy of lorcaserin, which can lead to a consistent 5% weight loss. This falls under prescription weight loss drugs, meaning you can only get them through a doctor. These are usually recommended for people with obesity and are starting a supervised weight loss program.

They May Have Side Effects

Diet supplements work differently for everyone, which is why they always warn of any side effects. Most of these side effects are harmless, but there are those that are potentially damaging to your health. For instance, many diet pills have high levels of caffeine, which is known to increase metabolism. Those sensitive to this substance generally should steer clear of these pills, because caffeine can increase heart rate, cause sleep disorders, and lead to migraines, among others.

Other weight loss pills have ingredients that do not work well in tandem with other supplements. If you plan to take vitamin supplements in tandem with weight loss pills, always check the ingredients. Some supplements may have adverse reactions if mixed with other substances.

There Are Fake Supplements

While there are diet supplements on the market that enjoy good reputations, it is also common for them to be counterfeited, with fake versions of successful supplements wrecking havoc on unsuspecting victims. To check whether one is fake, Pretty Me recommends opening the bottle instead of just checking the labels. Producers of fake diet supplements may be good at copying packaging and label designs, but one clue can be in the color of the pills themselves. Fake ones take on another color than the original and may be sold at cheaper prices. Therefore, to avoid falling victim to fake pills, only shop at reputable drug stores.

Supplements Can’t Replace Diet and Exercise

Diet Pills Watchdog points out that there is no weight loss pill that works like a miracle. Taking one doesn’t excuse you from having to maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise. Those are still important, and if you combine diet supplements with them, you may get better results. Some people become too dependent on their pills and lose sight of this fact, and they end up not seeing their desired outcomes.

Check with Your Physician

If you’re ever unsure about your choice in supplements, there’s definitely no harm in checking with your doctor. Aside from pointing out any risk factors, they may even recommend better alternatives. For instance, nutrition specialist Jay Raymundo advised adding certain foods to your diet instead of consuming fat burners. It’s because these foods can provide the same effects as those pills do.

Generally, physicians also advise focusing mainly on diet and exercise. Remember that diet pills only serve to augment your health goals. If one were to quantify it, diet pills should only do 20% of weight loss work, while the rest should be left to regular exercise and good nutrition.
