66 Participants Attended Financial Literacy Workshops thumbnail

The Live-in Caregiver Program of the Centre for Newcomers in collaboration with the Filipino Community Development Program of the Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association (CIWA) and Money Management – Financial Literacy Program of Momentum delivered Financial Literacy workshops to 66 participants, mostly Filipino Live-in Caregivers.

There were also participants from other ethnic groups such as Chinese, Malaysian, Thai, Columbian and Middle Easterners.
The workshop covered relevant topics such as Assets, Budgeting, Banking, Credit and Consumerism.
Each Money Management session is composed of at least two (2) hours of financial literacy class every Saturdays, held at Centre for Newcomers. It started on May 30, 2009 and ended on June 20, 2009 in settings where participants were comfortable, usually within their context as a group. Participants were able to learn how to budget, track their expenses, receive resources to support successful money management strategies and more importantly became more confident in their personal money management.  Majority of participants are already implementing what they have learned from these sessions. On the last day of the workshop, 19 participants were given certificate of completion for attending all of the five (5) topics.

The series of workshops were facilitated in by Donna McBride from Momentum and were jointly organized by Teresita Lim from the Centre for Newcomers and Fromen Bensing from Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association (CIWA).

1. The Centre for Newcomers is a place where newcomers to Canada find connections in Calgary. It works in partnership with newcomer communities to provide opportunities for individuals to adjust, succeed and contribute as citizens in Canada, and to work in partnership with Calgary communities to affirm and value diversity.
2. Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association (CIWA) was established in 1982 as a non-profit organization to address the needs and concerns of immigrant and refugee women, youth, children and families.
3. Momentum is a Community Economic Development (CED) organization that offers hope and opportunity to people living in poverty. It is a not-for-profit society that has been partnering with low-income Calgarians to develop their productive futures since 1991.
