Pupil Rocked Calgary

By Melvin Laureano

ABS-CBN’s The Filipino Channel (TFC) and JMJ Promotions with the help of many sponsors including Pinoy Times brought Pupil Live in Calgary Concert on October 10, 2009 at the Telus Convention Center. Most of those who attended the concert are the youth and many fans of the former band Eraserheads.

Pupil is one of the most popular bands in the Philippines today. During the NU107 Rock Awards 2008, Pupil won the Album of the Year for their album Wildlife, Monobloc for Rock Video of the Year, Producer of the Year, Wendell Garcia for Drummer of the Year and of course the Artist of the Year Award.

The name Pupil was found by the former Eraserheads` vocalist and now the band’s frontman, Ely Buendia while browsing a medical book. They chose the name Pupil because Buendia liked the fact that it is the part of the eye where light enters. Lead guitarist Yan Yuzon likes its double meaning, as well as the “eternal learning” connotations of the name. Pupil’s launch gig was on July 13, 2005 at the UP Bahay ng Alumni. Yan is the older brother of the Sponge Cola guitarist and frontman, Yael Yuzon. He also taught theatre direction at the Ateneo de Manila University. Yan is also a writer of ABS-CBN’s Goin’ Bulilit and portray some extra roles in Kapamilya Teleserye. Dok Sergio is the bass guitarist and the brother of the Rivermaya’s bassist Japs Sergio.
