Tamaraw Seniors Club 6th Annual Thanksgiving and Gala Night

The Tamaraw Seniors Club of Calgary held its 6th Annual Thanksgiving and Gala Night on Saturday 30 October 2010 at St. Vladimir’s Cultural Centre. Two hundred Calgary seniors and invited guests, including Alberta Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker / Calgary Fort MLA Wayne Cao, were treated to an evening of sumptuous food, live entertainment and enthusiastic dancing music. Tickets for the evening’s event were distributed free to Calgary seniors thanks to the hard work of Tamaraw members and friends who worked monthly bingos at the 5 Star Bingo Centre for the past year.

The Opening Ceremonies included welcoming remarks from Tamaraw President Frank Tigley, and both the Philippines National Anthem and Canada’s National Anthem being sung by Tamaraw member Letty Macalam and Tamaraw Director Josie Ramlal respectively. They were accompanied on a piano keyboard by pianist Adrielle Soriano. A Thanksgiving message was read by Tamaraw Auditor Ethel Medel, and the Invocation was performed by Pastor Jose Velasco.  Immediately thereafter, all celebrants were invited to enjoy a delicious meal of teriyaki chicken and fresh salmon supplemented with eggrolls, rice, salad, corn soup, dessert and refreshments provided by the SUMO Grill located in Sunridge Mall. Special thanks to SUMO Grill’s Alec and his assistant, and volunteer Ontoy Amorado for the meal preparation and presentation.

During the meal, the celebrants were serenaded with individual vocal solos by Simone Amorado, 2010 Little Miss Calgary, and Jasmine Remoquillo, 2010 Grand Champion Pinoy Singing Sensation for Alberta, plus a sultry duet by Jasmine and her partner Kenneth Murillo, and a delightful piano rendition by Tamaraw Secretary Georgianna Ritter.

The theme for the night was “ Nostalgia Filipinas: A Cultural Show ”. The show was composed and choreographed by Tamaraw Director and Gala Night Chairman Cora Urbano, and was performed by a cast of 30 of Tamaraw’s enthusiastic, dedicated and very talented members. The show involved a dream that Cora had had that reminisced about life in the Philippines including fishing, farming, cockfighting, elections and courting rituals. Accompanied by Adrielle Soriano on the piano keyboards, the show was punctuated by several cultural dance routines, vocal solo performances by Tamaraw P.R.O Beng Frost and Tamaraw Director Gene Sultan, and a rousing Filipino Folksong Medley from the Tamaraw Seniors Choir conducted by Beng Frost. The Grand Finale involved a singing performance by all of the performers who participated in the show. Special thanks to Tamaraw guests Clem and Ancie Tigley, and Gilda Jose – Fajardo and Mike Sullivan for participating in the show

To end the formal part of the evening’s festivities, Tamaraw President Frank Tigley presented a number of awards. Awarded the 2010 President’s Award was Tamaraw Treasurer Gary Frost for his behind – the – scenes work with the Tamaraw Seniors Club. Citation Awards were presented to Cora Urbano, Beng Frost, Georgianna Ritter, Wennie Baquir and Portia Falgui for their loyalty and dedicated service to the Tamaraw Seniors Club over the years. And an Appreciation Award was presented to Lourdes Cardoso for opening her home weekly since the summer to all the performers to allow for the performance rehearsals. Tamaraw Vice President Ruben Macalam gave the closing remarks to close the formal part of the evening. He thanked all those in attendance for having made the evening a success. Fred Sayson of I.D.M. DJ Services provided the music for the dance portion of the evening.

Since August 2010, Tamaraw P.R.O. Beng Frost has been working with both Simone Amorado and Jasmine Remoquillo on their performances as they prepared for their individual competitions. She has also been actively involved in helping to organize fundraising opportunities for both Simone and Jasmine in preparation for their upcoming events. Simone recently flew to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on Sunday 7 November 2010 to participate against contestants from 30 countries in the 2010 Maja Of The World Beauty Pageant in the Little Miss Maja category. Tamaraw Seniors Club and Barrio Fiesta have supported fundraising activities for Simone which raised more than $1,500 including a $300 contribution from the Tamaraw Seniors Club. Having been crowned the 2010 Grand Champion Pinoy Singing Sensation for Alberta in late August 2010, Jasmine has the opportunity to record an album of songs composed by Vehnee Saturno, a renowned music hit maker. She will be travelling to Manila in the spring of 2011 where she will spend 2 to 3 months to produce, promote and market her album. A series of concerts and other fundraising activities in Calgary are planned to attract sponsors and investors for her recording project. Tamaraw Seniors Club was very fortunate to have both Simone and Jasmine performing at its 6th Annual Thanksgiving and Gala Night whereby Tamaraw members sincerely wish both of them good luck with their future adventures.
