MP Devinder Shory: Economy is Our Government’s #1 Priority = 22,000 New Full-time Jobs in December

MP Devinder Shory: Economy is Our Government’s #1 Priority = 22,000 New Full-time Jobs in December

Statistics Canada reported today that 22,000 new jobs were created in December. The unemployment rate stands at 7.6 per cent – the lowest since January 2009. The increase was due entirely to new full-time jobs in the private sector. Gains were particularly strong in the manufacturing sector.

“Our Government’s number one priority continues to be the economy,” said Devinder Shory, Member of Parliament for Calgary Northeast. “December’s job growth again demonstrates that Canada’s Economic Action Plan is working. Our economy has grown for the past five straight quarters, and recovered more jobs than were lost during the global recession. Since July 2009 over 460,000 new jobs have been created across the country.” As the Conservatives have said all along, however, the global recovery remains fragile.

“That’s why we are continuing to implement our job-creating, low-tax plan,” said MP Shory. “While Canada’s Economic Action Plan continues to deliver for Canadians, the Ignatieff-led Coalition with the Bloc Québécois would recklessly hike taxes on job creators – halting our recovery in its tracks and killing almost 400,000 jobs.”

Indeed, in the words of the National Post, “it should perhaps come as no surprise that an Abacus Data poll this week found Canadians associate the Conservatives with economic recovery and low taxes and the Liberals with weak leadership and internal divisions.”

“While the Liberals keep talking about forcing another election, we Conservatives will keep working. We have always promised to lead the way on jobs and growth. At the end of the day, it puts paycheques in the bank, food on the table, shoes on our kids’ feet and it’s what Canadians want. Conservatives made a promise to Canadian families, and we are delivering.”
