Successful Fundraising Concert

….Pinoy Times’ Pride and Glory!

HAWAK KAMAY PARA SA PINOY 2012

The resiliency of Filipinos once again was put to test. The Philippines, though not spared from calamities, were put under the pressure of monsoon winds and non-stop raining in August that flooding became inevitable. The local weather bureau admitted it wasn’t a strong typhoon that hit, but the volume of rain that fell for a few days, partnered by the movement of the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) were mainly to be blamed for this intensified flooding. Needless to say, another calamity hit Metro Manila to which many consider, are vulnerable to such because of its poor sewage system. Garbage disposal has always been an issue in this part of our nation. Thus, many were affected and displaced again. The Marikina river overflowed, Commonwealth area had a landslide, and certain parts of Marcos Highway collapsed. Losses throughout were calculated at approximately 604 million pesos.

It is this that catapulted Pinoy Times’ Connie Kriaski & her staff to launch once again a call to raise funds from fellow Filipino-Calgarians who are avid supporters of both publications, The Pinoy Times and PinoyLiving Today Magazine. Connie, myself, and Alan Isidoro collected our thoughts in having an afternoon of entertainment in exchange of raising funds for the benefit of those who were highly affected by this unfortunate event. With Pinoy Radio 94.7 FM’s support, Reth “Juan Manila” Barnachea and his staff, donated their time and service to help us disseminate the information in a period of 4 weeks. It was announced, both on paper and on the radio. Thus, tickets for the event were put out.

When September 16th came, readers and listeners all around Calgary never wasted their time. For those who have expressed their intentions to help, both by buying tickets as well as volunteering, we were highly grateful. They went straight to the Crossroad Community Center to partake in this charitable event. There were local Calgarians that donated their time and talents (singing and dancing) to make this event a success. Indeed, the Filipinos in Calgary have good hearts. Their compassion and love for their mother country never ceased. Everyone had one goal in mind. To raise funds that will be added to the ongoing support that local charities and foundations back home are continuously doing.

We would also like to make mention of the generous support made by the MLA of Calgary Greenway Honorable Manmeet Bhullar, whose support to all ethnic communities is very known. The endless “ayes” that we get from our local businesses to name a few, UMAC Cargo Forwarders, iRemit International Money Remittance, Jet Set Travel, Alice Cabagan of Greatlife Financial, CHT Events, and many more. The unexpected arrival of Quay Evano, a correspondent for ABS-CBN’s Balitang Canada was a sure sign that our calling reached the many corners of this City. It was indeed an honor for all who had participated and made their presence known. For this we all are grateful. MABUHAY!!!
