Filipinos here in Calgary, Alberta  got a taste of the  fun and merrymaking of  a  traditional German  Oktoberfest  celebration last October 11,2013 as  numbers of people  trooped to the  Calgary Marlborough Community Hall to join and take part in this annual world celebrated event.

Oktoberfest which traces its origin a long time ago  in a far away land known as Bavaria started as a horse racing event in honor of royal families , Through the years it evolved to be a big festival of merrymaking  and  beer drinking party.

The moving spirits behind the successful staging of this year’s  Calgary’s Oktoberfest Barkadahan  are two gentleman both driven by a common goal and shares the same passion for music and entertainment.  Reth Barnachea aka Juan Manila, anchorman  of Radyo Pinoy and Pinoy TV  collaborated with Ronald  Ala  owner of the popular Pacific Hut Restaurant to give Fil Calgarians  this one night of October to remember complete with entertainment, food and ice cold San Miguel Beer.

Highlights of the evening were a trip down memory lane performance by the Beatles inspired group called  All You Need Is Love  plus  two of Calgary’s  best local bands Orient Mode  and Tangerine Band who  both  kept the audience on their feet dancing the night away with their pop, rock and retro music.

To spice up the night there was a beer drinking contest  which was surprisingly won by a lone female contestant who went up against four beer guzzling male counterparts.

The staging of this kind of event could provide avenues for Calgary based Filipino bands to showcase their talents  in front of their local audience  and based on this year’s crowd turnout and support  we are definitely bound to have a repeat next year as both echoed by the organizers.

So there you have it Calgary, Oktoberfest is not just for Germans anymore but it is for all of us to enjoy. See you in October!!!
