Easter Gives Meaning

In this time and age, after 2,000 years, does Easter still matter?

There are two religious holidays in our society – Christmas and Easter. For most of us, Christmas is the much celebrated season of the year. It’s that time of year when families, friends and relatives gather together to exchput ange gifts, sing carols and decorate the tree. Christmas is the most exciting and the culmination of the year.

Easter? Unfortunately, even some Christians view Easter as a second-rate holiday. For most people, it just meant another long weekend, another chance to get away for a few days.

Think about this: If Easter had not happened, Christmas would have no meaning. If the tomb is not empty, the cradle makes no difference. If Easter is not true, then Christmas must only be a story of an obscure baby born in an out-of-the-way place in a forgotten land 2000 years ago. It is Easter that gives meaning to Christmas.

Easter is the focal point of the Christian Faith. It is significant and necessary for four main reasons:

1) the resurrection of Jesus was necessary to prove that Christ was who He claimed to be. Our Lord had clearly claimed to be the son of God which was the reason why the religious leaders conspired to kill him. The resurrection was God’s proof that the Lord Jesus was Who He claimed to be : the son of God.

2) the resurrection of Jesus was necessary to prove that Jesus Christ had accomplished what He had promised. It is by our identification with Him in His death, burial and resurrection that we are saved.

3) the resurrection was necessary in order to fulfill the biblical prophesy. The Old Testament Scriptures were understood by the apostles to foretell the resurrection of Jesus.

4) the resurrection of Christ is a necessary element of a saving faith. In both the Old and New Testaments, a saving faith was a faith in a God’s who could and would raise men from the dead.

Today, the meaning of Easter, for millions of Christians worldwide, is that of honoring and recognizing Jesus Christ’s resurrection from the dead, and his glorious promises of eternal life for those who believe in Him. Easter is Jesus Christ’s victory over death. Jesus’ resurrection gave final and irrefutable proof that He was truly the Son of God and that he conquered death.

Without Easter, there is no Christianity.
